Valencia will host the next world conference of the International network ¨Living Lakes,¨ an entity created in 1998, comprising more than 140 groups of lakes and wetlands and more than 80 organizations from all continents. Its foundation was designed to increase the protection, restoration, and rehabilitation of lakes, wetlands, and fresh water reserves around the globe.
In late April the mayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá, welcomed the president of ¨Living Lakes¨ Marion Hammerl to city hall to explain the expectations and characteristics of the conference. Approximately 200 people, including experts and technicians, participated in this international assembly. Among the issues to be addressed, emphasis will be placed on the aspiration of L’Albufera of Valencia becoming a biosphere reserve, whose candidacy presents the City Council of Valencia.
The statement aimed at L’Albufera and its environment will include guarantees of conservation to promote the International Network of Lakes and Freshwater Reserves, ¨Living Lakes¨, which has been part of the Valencian wetland since May 2009.
