
Among the sporting and cultural activities planned in the context of the European Sports Capital, whose title is held by Valencia in 2011, the city held the First Congress of Sports Facilities in early April. This brought together top international experts in architecture and engineering and applied to sports.
Among those who attended the meeting were people like Mamoru Kawaguchi, the author of works such as the Tokyo Indoor Olympic Stadium and the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. He spoke via conference call. Furthermore, the congress brought together some 300 participants specialising in sports facilitates who gave talks about large architectural areas destined for practising sport professionally. Cases like the Caja Mágica in Madrid, the Velodrome and the Olympic swimming pools in Berlin, the Olympic Stadium and the Emirates Stadium in London were some of the examples given.
Cardiff in 2014
To coincide with the First European Congress of Facilities, the city of Valencia and the European Capitals of Sports Association named Cardiff the European Capital of Sport for 2014, after Istanbul (2012) and Antwerp (2013). Their mayor, Keith Hyde, collected the award.
